Close to thirty-five thousand people gathered at Canada’s National War Memorial for the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa this year. “When we say we will remember them, we mean it,” says Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President Berkley Lawrence. “We will remember their bravery, their sacrifice, and how their selflessness led to our lives of freedom today.”

Dorsan “Sam” Lambert grew up just outside of Bruges, Belgium, on a small plot of land his family cultivated. He was only 9 years old when the Second World War began, and it was only eight months later Germany would occupy Belgium for the remainder of the war. “It was simply terrifying. I was afraid for 4 years, non-stop,” Sam said. One of the core pillars of The Royal Canadian Legion is supporting the tradition of Remembrance –amplifying the stories of Veterans who have served our country is one way of continuing this tradition.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s 2024 National Poppy Campaign launched today with wider access to Poppies than ever before, Remembrance stories about Canada’s Veterans highlighting the Royal Canadian Airforce, a new ceremony planner for teachers, and hundreds of new locations participating in an advertising blackout to encourage Canadians to take two minutes of silence.

The Royal Canadian Legion is set to expand its Poppy distribution capability by offering lapel Poppies for the first time via a new storefront on the Amazon.ca store. The Poppies will be offered on Amazon.ca for donations of $2, $5, $10, and $20. One hundred percent of the funds raised will go directly to the Legion’s Poppy Trust Fund to help support our Veterans, their families, and communities.

The Royal Canadian Legion presented the First Poppy of the 2024 National Poppy Campaign today, to Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada. The Legion’s Dominion President, Berkley Lawrence, pinned her Poppy during the traditional annual event at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Berkley Lawrence of Newfoundland and Labrador, was named The Royal Canadian Legion’s new Dominion President during the organization’s 49th Dominion Convention held in Saint John, New Brunswick from August 25-28.
