Congratulations to Julie Payette, the next Governor General of Canada

Jul 13, 2017

The Royal Canadian Legion extends warm congratulations to Julie Payette who was selected to be the next Governor General of Canada. Ms. Payette will succeed Governor General David Johnston in September.

The Legion has a tradition of inviting the incoming Governor General, who also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces, to become the Grand Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion. As Grand Patron, the Governor General accepts the ceremonial First Poppy at Rideau Hall, launching the Legion’s Poppy Campaign, and leads the Vice Regal Party in the National Remembrance Day Ceremony. The Governor General has long been a supporter of Canada’s Veterans and helps Canada honour the tradition of Remembrance.

We look forward to welcoming Ms. Payette to the honoured role of Governor General, and have extended to her the invitation to become the Grand Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion.

It is also with fondness and appreciation that we express our sincere thanks to His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and current Grand Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion, for his service to country and his support and contribution towards Canada’s Veterans.
