Sharon McKeown

Dominion First Vice-President

Sharon McKeown is Chair of the Dominion Command Poppy and Remembrance Committee and Vice-Chair of the Veterans Services and Seniors Committee. She is a member of other committees, and Chair of the Board of Canvet Publications.

  • Dominion Vice-President from 2021-2024, Past Chair and Vice-Chair of Public Relations Committee, and past member of other Dominion Command Committees including Membership.
  • Past President of Ontario Command (2017-2019).
  • Ontario Command, Vice-President (2011-2017). Introduced Operation Service Dog and Seniors’ Literary program. Served on all provincial committees, and involved with cadet liaison, resolutions, seniors and property, was membership chair, and kicked off Legion Riders.
  • Joined Branch 136 Milton, ON in 1981 at the request of her father, a Veteran. Served in a variety of roles including 9 years as branch President. Was Zone B-7 Commander (2003-2005), District B Deputy Commander (2005-2009) and Commander (2009-2011).
  • At the local level acts as Chair of the District B Hospital Trust Fund, is a member of the Tri-District ABC Hospital Committee, and of Hugh Farthing TVS. Immediate past president of Branch 136 Ladies Auxiliary.
  • Awarded Life Membership by Branch 136 in 2002, Meritorious Service Medal by Zone B-7 in 2010, and the Palm Leaf to MSM by District B in 2017.
  • Presented the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by Ontario Command in 2012, Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by the Governor General of Canada in 2018, and the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.
  • Received Certificate of Appreciation from Canadian Cancer Society as a co-founder of the Ladies Drive 4 Cancer, and work with Golfing 4 Cancer. Other Volunteer activities involved serving on municipal committees, leadership roles in scouts/guides, girls/ladies’ softball, and working with the Milton Lions Club.
  • Education includes Fellow to the Insurance Institute of Canada – Management Major, licensed in all lines of insurance. Certificates in Life Underwriters, Dale Carnegie accounting, and numerous industry-related courses.
  • Retired after over 35 years in the Insurance industry, with positions in sales, service, claims, and management.
  • Sharon and husband Bill moved to Milton in 1975. They have two children, Wil and Tracy who are also Legion members and their daughter is a Deputy Zone Commander and Ladies Auxiliary president. Their two grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson, are future Legionnaires. Their home is an 1870’s ‘station house’, affectionately called the ‘money pit’.
