The Royal Canadian Legion is looking for Legion members who are interested in volunteering to visit Veterans in long term care facilities. Through the Outreach and Visitation Initiative (OVI), Legion members visit more than 7,000 Veterans in 1,500 long-term care facilities across the country. The program provides Veterans with an opportunity to have a social visit with a Legion volunteer and to raise concerns or identify needs that might be addressed by Veterans Affairs Canada or the Legion.
We have an urgent need for volunteers in the following areas:
Alberta/Northwest Territories Command
- Edmonton (2 Volunteers)
- Calgary (1 Volunteer)
- Swift Current/Maple Creek/Shaunavon (1 Volunteer)
- Saskatoon (1 Volunteer)
Manitoba/Northwest Ontario Command

Volunteers must be able to prepare hand written reports, travel by motor vehicle, co-ordinate arrangements and interact with others to gather information. Volunteers will be compensated for expenses for each visit.
Volunteers will attend a one-time training session in Ottawa and also undergo Government of Canada security screening through the Legion. It is anticipated that the next OVI volunteer training session will be held at Legion House in Ottawa late May 2016.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Legion members to make a real difference in the lives of Veterans. If you are a Legion member and are interested in volunteering for this program, please contact the Legion Outreach and Visitation Initiative Coordinator, Comrade Gary Foster, by 22 April 2016.
