OTTAWA, ON, February 23rd 2015 – Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, Tom Eagles, announced this past weekend at Legion House, that BC/Yukon Command is the winner of the Bert Garrett Award, which recognizes growth in Legion membership.
“It is time that we recognize our Legion recruiters,” said Eagles, “so we have introduced the Bert Garrett Award for the highest percentage increase for any provincial command in a calendar year beginning with 2014,” says Eagles. “The award goes to BC/Yukon Command for achieving an 11.06% increase in new and reinstated members for 2014,”adds Eagles.
The award is named after Comrade Bert Garrett who was a member at Legion Branch#148 in Renfrew, ON. In 1963, Garrett personally recruited 182 Legion members. This achievement is the highest personal record ever reported by a Legion member.
This annual award will be presented formally to the Provincial Command with the highest new and reinstated members recruited during their Provincial Convention or at Dominion Convention. At the national convention, provincial commands will also be acknowledged in order of their respective membership campaigns (by percentage) as another way of recognizing their efforts.
Anyone can join the Legion, Canada’s largest Veterans and community support organization by visiting their local Legion branch or online at www.legion.ca/join6.
