Aug 18, 2016

OTTAWA, ON, 30 March 2016 – Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, Tom Eagles, is pleased to announce that Comrade Sheridan Ellingson, from the Tisdale Legion, Branch#50, Saskatchewan will be representing the Legion at the centennial Nijmegen March held in the Kingdom of the Netherlands between 19 and 22 July 2016.

“Canada’s strong bond with the Kingdom of the Netherlands makes the Nijmegen March an extremely important event for our organization to support – particularly as it celebrates its centennial anniversary,” says Tom Eagles. This year, the number of applicants exceeded all expectations. That said, we are pleased that Mr. Ellingson, with 20 years of military service in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) and a Legion member, who retired in 2009, was selected.

“For more than a decade, The Royal Canadian Legion has been supporting the CAF team so that they may visit Canada’s birthplace as a nation, forged under fire during the battle of Vimy Ridge while in Europe,” says Mr. Eagles. In return, the CAF has been kind enough to allow the Legion to send one of its members to be a part of the CAF military team during the Nijmegen March,” adds Eagles.

The Nijmegen March, is labeled one of the world’s largest walking/marching events and is held in the Nijmegen area of the Netherlands in mid-July every year. For the military it entails four days of walking more than 40kms per day with a 10kgs backpack for each soldier. Historically, more than 7,000 military from all over the world participate in this event and an additional 42,000 civilians also take part without the backpack requirement.
