OTTAWA, ON, 1 May 2020 – On April 28, Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President, Thomas D. Irvine, sent a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau requesting clarity on the Emergency Community Support Fund. Announced by the Federal Government on April 21, the Fund provides additional support to charities and non-profit organizations. While information on the Fund is starting to emerge, full details on eligibility criteria, use of the funds and application processes have not yet been shared.

Legion Branches across Canada provide essential services to Veterans and their families in need, and many continue to support communities during this challenging time. With Legion Branches closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Branches cannot generate revenue required for their operations. The Legion does not have a clear understanding on whether the Emergency Community Support Fund will be available to help our Branches stay alive so we can continue to provide the vital services our Veterans and communities need.

Immediate financial relief is crucial to ensure the Legion can continue to provide essential services and supports to Veterans, seniors and communities… now and into the future. The Prime Minister stated they Government is looking at how they can support various organizations. The Legion looks forward to working with the Government on supports they will extend to Legion Branches across the country.
