News Release
28 October 2010
Ottawa – The Royal Canadian Legion is extremely pleased with the announcements made by the Finance Ministers of Canada and Ontario about the removal of taxes from poppies and wreath purchases.
“We welcome the announcements made yesterday by the Finance Minister of Ontario and the further announcement today by the Federal Finance Minister about the removal of taxes from the purchases of poppies and wreaths,” said Patricia Varga, Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion.
“This will mean that the funds raised by the branches for their Poppy Trust Funds will not have to go to the governments involved but will go to help veterans across Canada. Hundreds of thousands of dollars will be saved by this move and those are funds that will go to help our veterans,” she added.
The actual amount of the rebate for 2010 is still being calculated because the Legion will still have to pay the HST on other material purchased to aid in the Poppy Campaign such as promotional material, poppy trays and freight.
